Amazon Ship by Region (Shipping Settings) program

Ship by Region, also known as Amazon Shipping settings, is a new program Amazon is rolling out as an enhancement to their current shipping settings. This program will allow merchants to choose what shipping methods they want to offer, where they want to ship items, and what rate they want to charge for each region they ship to.

What is Ship by Region?
Amazon’s Ship by Region, also known as Amazon Shipping settings, is a new program by Amazon that has slowly been rolled out to Amazon Seller Central merchants. It allows you to set the shipping methods, transit times, and shipping rates for the countries and regions you want to ship to, and configure different shipping settings for different sets of SKUs.

 

With the new program you can create, edit, and delete shipping templates, set the shipping rate for them, and assign shipping templates to inventory groups. Items will list to Amazon using the shipping template you assign, and will price using the shipping rate you specify in the shipping template. Ship by Region is supported for Amazon US, CA, UK, DE, and FR accounts. The program is currently in Beta status. It began rolling out to merchants at the end of Q/3 2016. Currently Amazon expects that all merchants will have this program by the end of Q1/2017.

What are Amazon Ship by Region shipping templates?
Currently, Amazon’s shipping settings do not allow for much customization. Because of this, many merchants are using shipping overrides in an effort to customize their shipping settings. Under the new program, you will be able to create and save custom shipping settings in a pre-defined format called a ‘shipping template’. You will be able to create up to 20 shipping templates that will allow you to set shipping methods, regions, rates, and transit times, and can be set per-item or weight-based.

 

Some of the shipping methods in the templates include ‘Standard’, ‘Expedited’, and ‘Free Economy’ shipping. Each template can be customized with its own unique transit times and shipping rates, and can be assigned at the SKU level. Below is an example of a shipping template that has been created and named “Pacific Northwest”.

Amazon has provided some details through Seller Central about the new program:

  • Set your own shipping transit times by state
  • Use different shipping rates for Two-day Delivery by state
  • Set transit times and shipping rates for the countries you want to ship to
  • Set different shipping settings for different sets of SKUs

It’s important to note that at this time Amazon will not automatically migrate shipping settings for media items (Books, Music, Video, DVDs / BMVD items). For BMVD items, merchants will be able to control shipping methods, regions, and transit times, but not rates.

When is it available to Amazon merchants?

Amazon started Beta testing this program to a limited number of merchants in Q/3 2015. Early in 2016, they added an Opt-in feature to Seller Central so that certain merchants could enroll in the program. Toward the end of Q/1 2017, Amazon expects to end the Beta program and have this program enabled in all merchants’ Seller Central account.

How do I opt-in to the Amazon beta?
At this time, not all merchants are eligible to join the Beta program. To migrate to the new shipping platform, login to your Seller Central account and enter the shipping configuration area. If you are eligible, you will see a message that allows you to be added to the Ship by Region program. To get started, click on the ‘Migrate Now’ button at the top of the page to initiate the migration process. Please note, once you migrate to the new shipping platform, you will be unable to revert to the old version.
